Challenging year continues for Iowa farmer

The 2019 harvest season has been a struggle for many farmers across the Midwest.

Steve Kuiper, who farms near Knoxville in south-central Iowa, is among them.

“We’ve had some issues lately with mud. We’ve still got some soybeans to cut and we’ve got a lot of corn to combine yet,” Kuiper says. “I’m like everybody else—a little anxious about where we’re at.”

But Kuiper says they have been pleased with their yields

“Our beans are running lower to mid-60’s, on average. I suppose we’ll average around 64-65 bushels. For our area, that’s pretty good,” he says. “Corn—what we’ve done so far has been all April corn—but it been over 200 bushels, a lot of it.”

Kuiper says he’s “pretty amazed” at those yields, considering what the crop has been through this year.
