Central Illinois farmer done planting, now waiting for rain

The 2023 planting season is finished up for a central Illinois farmer and now he is just waiting for rain.

Travis Rovey of Farmersville tells Brownfield they had ideal conditions for spring in northern Montgomery County.

“We had adequate moisture. Field conditions for the first part of April were ideal. We started planting the Monday after Easter and ground conditions were probably the best they’ve worked in quite a while.”

He says he finished planting about a week ago and now they have hit a dry spell following a half inch rain nearly two weeks ago.

“The way the wind has been blowing and the sun shining, the moisture didn’t last very long. Now we’re kind of fighting crusted soil. We’re trying to get the crop up out of the ground now. There’s a lot of rotary hoes running in the field, just trying to get this crop up and going.”

He says fields in northern Montgomery and southern Sangamon County are 85% to 90% planted.
