Censky: 3rd tranche of MFP could be considered even if deal is made with China

USDA Deputy Secretary Stephen Censky says because of current farm income, a third tranche of MFP payments could be considered even if a deal with China is reached.

During the Illinois Farm Bureau Annual Meeting Monday, West central Illinois farmer Steve Turner expressed his concerns to Censky as negotiations continue for a phase one trade deal with China.

“We want trade, we don’t want aid, but right now the banker is going to start needing paid and that MFP is a big part of it.”

Censky told the delegation a decision on a third tranche of Market Facilitation Program payments will be made in January.

“Let’s say that we have a trade agreement and things really get moving. We know that the farm income situation has been effected and can’t be turned around overnight and there is still great need for those payments especially this year.”

He says if a deal with China is made it will include very robust purchase commitments and since prices could go up in that situation and third tranche of MFP is not promised.
