Cargill CEO says farmers, infrastructure key to supply chain sustainability

The CEO of Cargill says sustainability needs to be embedded into supply chains to responsibly feed a growing world.

“Sustainability is the presenting issue of our time, of this year, of 2020, and certainly beyond, and agriculture is how we can solve some of the issues in terms of the resilience of the food supply chain.”

David MacLennan recently spoke on how farmers and ranchers are a critical solution for climate change during the National Grain and Feed Association’s annual convention.  He tells Brownfield infrastructure investments are also needed to strengthen supply chains as the world demands more food.

“As the world grows, there’s more people that will demand more food,” he says.  “We’ve got to make sure that not only can we produce it sustainably, but can we get it to where it’s needed.”

In the U.S., MacLennan says there needs to be reliable, modern technology and transportation systems to keep products moving.

“It’s going to be about port facilities, the waterways, the rail and roads,” he says.

MacLennan also highlighted the work of Cargill to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in its global supply chains by 30 percent per ton of product by 2030 including through regenerative agriculture practices and its biodiesel plant partnership with Love’s in Nebraska.
