Carbon market guide developed in Minnesota

Minnesota Farmers Union is helping members navigate carbon markets.

Government relations director Stu Lourey says MFU has partnered with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and Farmers Legal Action Group (FLAG) to develop a guide by anonymously gathering carbon contracts.

“And then we have the lawyers at FLAG go through those contracts, read through them, pull out you know ‘if you see this, this is what it means. This gives these rights to the company and takes this right from you. Pay attention to this piece.’ That sort of thing.”

He tells Brownfield the carbon market guide is intended to compliment other resources.

“As farmers are reading these contracts hopefully with the help of their attorney to make sure they’re getting a fair deal.”

One of the legislative priorities identified during last month’s Minnesota Farmers Union Convention involves climate resilience in agriculture.
