Carbon a headliner as Corn Growers meet virtually during Commodity Classic

Sustainability, carbon sequestration, and biofuels were among the main topics during the National Corn Growers annual meeting.

Iowa Corn president Carl Jardon, who farms near Randolph in southwest Iowa, says members met virtually as part of this year’s Commodity Classic.

“Some of it was just housekeeping, but then ethanol of course was a big topic, and sustainability of course. Then carbon, that’s an issue that’s hard to get our arms around. But it’s coming.”

Jardon has no-tilled for three decades and tells Brownfield it’s unclear how farmers like him would benefit from emerging carbon markets.

“One contract you had to implement a new program every year. Well, there’s only so many things we can do. So you have to be careful.”

He says farmers should have a lawyer look over contracts before signing a carbon credit contract.
