Bustos: Trump budget has deep cuts to agriculture

A U.S. House Agriculture Committee member says President Trump’s budget proposal does not show a commitment to agriculture, “He’s cutting USDA by 16-cents on the dollar and probably equally concerning to me is the fact that he’s calling for a $26-Billion cut in crop insurance.”

Illinois Democrat Cheri Bustos tells Brownfield Ag News crop insurance cannot be compromised, “There is not one region of my congressional district or any place in Illinois or when I’m meeting with producers and growers anywhere in the country where their number-one message to me is to make sure we have a robust crop insurance program as part of the Farm Bill.”

Bustos says the president’s 2019 budget proposal also zeros-out funding for the National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research in Peoria, Illinois, in her district. She says they fought to keep the center after Trump proposed cutting funding in his previous budget and she will be a part of that fight again.
