Buchanan County latest Agri-Ready Missouri County
Buchanan County has been granted the Missouri Farmers Care Agri-Ready Designation.
The designation identifies counties conducive to agricultural opportunity which
actively support Missouri agriculture.
County Farm Bureau board member Vernon Hart calls Buchanan County a prime place
for agriculture, with stockyards, grain elevators and an ethanol plant among
other agribusinesses.
The most recent data says Buchanan County generated $5.5 billion in agriculture
sales in 2016 supporting almost 11,000 local jobs. The county’s ag production
is primarily soybeans, corn and cattle. Value is added through animal
processing, agriculture chemical manufacturing, biofuels and pet food
manufacturing.
Through the Agri-Ready program, Missouri Farmers Care partners with county
leaders to promote agriculture and agri-business development. Missouri Farmers
Care also recruits 4-H and FFA leaders to implement Ag Education on the Move for
county third graders.
To qualify for Agri-Ready status, counties must avoid enacting agriculture-regulating
ordinances that are more stringent than state law. They also must support agriculture
stewardship, growth, and opportunities.
