Brown: beef, pork will benefit from US-Japan trade deal

University of Missouri Livestock Economist Scott Brown says progress in a US-Japan trade deal is the win U.S. beef and pork sectors have needed.

“If we talk about a significant reduction in tariffs on US beef going into Japan it seems to me that’s kind of the news we need to see some additional exports of beef out of the United States and can actually make things a little stronger as we look at prices,” he says.

He tells Brownfield he expects significant growth in US beef exports to Japan. He also says it will improve the gate price mechanism for US pork going into Japan.

“Changes to how gate price mechanism is implemented from a US-Japan agreement to me could spell some positives on the pork side and might be some of the help we need if we don’t see a big boost out of the Chinese market,” he says.

Brown says implementation of a trade deal could be what markets need to finish off 2019 on a stronger note.
