Biofuels ready to meet climate goals

Climate is a priority across the country as companies announce net-zero commitments and sustainability goals including electrification.

General Motors has announced plans to electrify its fleet and phase out gas and diesel-powered vehicles by 2035.

Growth Energy CEO Emily Skor says biofuels will continue to be available to help meet climate goals.

“Even the most aggressive projections have the internal combustion engine, that uses liquid fuel, as the dominant car on the road well beyond 2040,” she says. “If you look at the details of many of these proclamations, including GM’s proclamation, there is a lot of wiggle room and a lot of aspirational language.”

She says Growth Energy is working with lawmakers to highlight the benefits of biofuels.

“We are part of the solution that gets you to a zero-emission future and we are something that can be used in today’s auto fleet,” she says. “We are affordable for all communities and we not only lower greenhouse gas emissions but we also lower toxic pollutants coming out of the tailpipe.”

Speaking during the Agricultural Business Council of Kansas City, Skor says electric vehicles are not enough to meet climate goals and biofuels are a critical part of the solution.
