The U.S. House has passed legislation a Minnesota Farm Bureau member says will help her pursue a career in agricultural education.

The Strengthening Career and Technical Education Act reauthorizes and reforms the Carl Perkins Act to help more Americans enter the workforce with skills necessary for in-demand jobs.

Abbey Weninger of Buffalo, Minnesota, says this bill would provide a needed boost for ag-ed programs across the country.

“Getting the funding for those programs to continue hands-on learning activities, but also the funding for programs that are just starting up.  I’ve heard of a couple ag education programs that need more funding because they’re just starting, and this Career and Technical Education bill would help them with that.”

The House Committee on Education and the Workforce, which passed the bipartisan legislation unanimously, says state and local leaders will be empowered to develop plans specific to their needs.

The bill was approved 405 to 5 in the House and now goes to the Senate.
