A big swing in Wisconsin weather

A swing from 80-degree temperatures one weekend to frost and snow by the following weekend swept across Wisconsin fields last week.  The weekly Crop Progress Report from the National Ag Statistics Service Wisconsin Field Office says that measurable snow on Saturday morning was the earliest on record in Eau Claire.  Some areas had heavy rains on Thursday night making the fields too wet for any machinery.  Topsoil moisture is rated 80 percent adequate and 15 percent surplus.

47 percent of the state’s corn silage was chopped as of Sunday, 30 points behind the five-year average.  Reporters say the silage moisture was almost ideal and there is a lot of tonnage.  88 percent of the corn crop is dented and 52 percent mature compared to 95 percent dented and 66 percent mature normally by now.

96 percent of the soybeans ae turning color and 78 percent are dropping leaves.  Both numbers a little behind the five-year average.  7 percent of the soybeans are harvested, should be 27 percent by now.

85 percent of the state’s potato crop has been harvested and 38 percent of the winter wheat is planted.
