Between the Rows Tour highlights corn variability

The Corn Marketing Program of Michigan’s annual yield tour is finding mixed yield expectations.

Research manager Kristin Poley tells Brownfield some pockets of the state have great yields while others have struggled with prolonged dryness.

“It seems like the southern part of the state, south of I-94, have had a good bit of moisture—toward the west end of the state in particular,” she explains.  “Up towards central Michigan, we were very dry for a very long time.”

Poley says the Thumb and northcentral Michigan have been abnormally dry.

“That’s just starting to dissipate and we’re seeing that yields just aren’t quite as high as we would expect them to be,” she says.

The corn checkoff plans to make over 370 yield checks in 37 counties in the Lower Peninsula throughout August for the Between the Rows Crop Tour.  Update meetings are planned across the state this week and next with the results.  Find more details here.
