Best time to assess SCN quickly approaching

Fall might be the ideal time to assess soybean cyst nematode pressure.

Troy Bauer is a senior field tech rep with BASF.

“Growers need to understand what’s going on in their fields, and the best way to understand soybean cyst nematode is go out and soil sample in the fall if you believe you’re going to be planting that field to soybeans the following year.”

He tells Brownfield there are several soil testing labs farmers can submit samples to.

Unfortunately, Bauer says once SCN has been identified in a field it will always be present.

“So then it becomes, how do we manage it?”

He says best practices include rotating out of soybeans, planting resistant varieties, and using seed treatments.
