Beef’s nutritional profile helps aid healthy aging

A researcher with the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association says beef can play a vital role in healthy aging.

Mandy Carr Johnson says beef’s nutritional profile helps aging consumers maintain muscle mass, prevent diseases, and recover from injury. “We know that beef is really a great source of protein,” she says.  “And protein is so important as we continue to develop and maintain muscle.  We also know beef is a great source of iron.  Beef is a really complex nutrition package and includes protein, iron, zinc, B vitamins, and choline.”

She tells Brownfield checkoff dollars are used to help promote beef as a healthy protein option, and the Beef Checkoff works closely with dieticians and nutritionists.  “Making sure that dietitians are educated on beef’s role in a healthy diet is critically important,” he says.  “We have a longstanding effort to engage with dietitians to make sure that they have the latest research information for those who they provide counsel.”

Brownfield interviewed Carr Johnson during the NCBA’s recent Ag Trade Media Summit.
