Beef producers tackle tight feed supplies

Many cattlemen are concerned about the price and availability of feed in 2023.

Northwest Iowa beef producer Craig Moss says corn supplies have been tight. “With the ethanol biproduct market, availability was kind of tough,” he said. “We found ourselves buying larger quantities when available, just to have and to secure price.”

He tells Brownfield price risk is one of his biggest concerns in 2023, but… “We’re probably more concerned about basis risk,” Moss said. “Usually this time of year you would be looking at 30-to-50 cent under basis, and now you’re looking 40-to-50 over.”

Moss says hay supplies have been strong, but prices can be volatile. He spoke to Brownfield at the 2022 Iowa Cattle Industry Leadership Summit in Altoona.
