Beef industry in Missouri going strong

h2014-missouri-cattle-grazingMissouri Governor Jay Nixon has recognized the state’s beef industry in a proclamation for May beef month.

Mark Russell, with the Missouri Beef Industry Council, says Missouri remains a leading cow-calf state and cattle numbers are growing., “Well, the beef industry represents at least HALF of the 100-thousand farms in the state of Missouri. About 50-thousand farms have been cattle on them. And, those beef cattle represent about 1.8, 1.9-million head of beef cattle that are being produced in this state.”

Last year, Missouri was the second cow calf state behind Texas but was surpassed by Oklahoma last year which benefitted from normal rains after several years of drought.
