Be prepared for corn rootworm pressure

A South Dakota regional agronomist is telling growers to be prepared for corn rootworm pressure this upcoming growing season.

Gary Hegg with Dekalb/Asgrow tells Brownfield his area of western and central South Dakota saw a fair amount of rootworm pressure, mostly from northern root worm, last season.

“Even on soybeans, even on rotated ground, we could see ‘em out there. And, they’ll do what they call extended dispause where they’ll almost take a year off where they can emerge and give you some pressure almost two years removed from that, in that rotation.”

He urges growers to take a close look at their yield data, “To maybe plan ahead and put the appropriate trait out on those acres. Non-rotated ground, corn-on-corn especially.”

He says a heavy snow year can limit some corn rootworm egg survival but not a lot of snow has fallen this year. Hegg also says an overly wet spring can have a limiting effect but protections will still be needed.
