Bayer appealing EU on neonicotinoid ban

Bayer will be appealing a ruling by the General Court of the European Union to ban neonicotinoids.

Darren Wallis with Bayer’s North American Crop Science Division tells Brownfield science-based innovation in agriculture is important to help farmers produce enough food for a growing world.  “At Bayer, we feel this is important to continue to advocate for not only a growers’ rights to have access to technology, but science-based regulatory systems around the world.”

The court voted to ban the pesticides to protect honey bees. Bayer says the verdict could bring into question the EU’s approval process of other substances.

The use of neonicotinoids in the EU has been restricted to certain crops since 2013 after some studies linked the insecticides to unintended deaths of bees.  Environmental groups sought the total ban, which has sparked a debate across the continent about the wider use of chemicals in farming.

Bayer and Syngenta are impacted the most by the EU’s ruling.
