Avian Flu confirmed in German northern state

German authorities have ordered all poultry in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein be kept indoors following the discovery of avian influenza on two farms in the region.

The H5N8 strain is believed to be spreading through wild birds amid a series of outbreaks across Europe that most recently resulted in the culling of 48,000 chickens according to Dutch health officials.

The ag ministry of the German state warned the disease is moving rapidly and says they are currently examining the deaths of more than 3,000 wild birds there.

Cases have also been reported in northwest England, and on Tuesday South Korea’s ag ministry confirmed the H5N8 strain in samples of wild birds taken in the western part of the country.
