AURI looking for the next value-added opportunities

The Ag Utilization Research Institute (AURI) is fulfilling its purpose to help boost farm income.

AURI executive director Shannon Schlecht says the organization was created during the 1980’s farm crisis.

“To look at ways we can re-envision our commodities to help create disappearance and help spur those farm gate prices to a higher level through that utilization aspect.”

Speaking to Brownfield from the New Uses Forum in Minneapolis, he says this is a great time to consider the next value-added venture for agricultural products.

“What can we do differently, how can we think differently around what we’re doing today to add value to our bottom-line.”

Schlecht says AURI is currently assisting on a high-oleic soybean oil project in conjunction with the United Soybean Board.

The Institute is also working on bio-based opportunities aimed at phasing out petroleum with products produced from crops grown in the U.S.
