August poultry production a little lower than last year

U.S. poultry production fell slightly in August.

The USDA says the total of 4.708 billion pounds was modestly lower than last year, with a 1% decrease for chicken to 4.207 billion pounds more than canceling out a 9% increase in turkey at 488.903 million pounds.

Chicken slaughter and total average weights were also lower than a year ago, while turkey slaughter and average weights were higher.

For the year to date, 35.138 billion pounds of poultry have been certified as wholesome, 2% ahead of the 2022 pace.

The USDA’s next set of annual poultry production projections is out October 12th.
