Application open for Illinois cover crop premium discount

Illinois farmers who planted cover crops in the fall of 2019 that will be planted to an insurable crop in 2020 can now apply for a crop insurance discount.

Farmers can apply by January 15th for the program that will allow them to receive a $5 per acre discount on the following year’s crop insurance.

Illinois Director of Agriculture John Sullivan tells Brownfield the program is designed to promote additional cover crop acres not covered by other incentives.

“We know cover crops reduce soil loss, help to control weeds so there are less chemicals being applied and then of course that root structure helps to reduce nutrient loss. So, that is why I feel like that is an area that we really can make some strides and gains. That is why I have been trying to work for additional funding so that we can increase that over time.”

Funding will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis and capped at 50,000 acres.
