App helps farmers monitor field management practices

Ohio State University has developed an app to help farmers compare different management decisions for crop fields. John Fulton, precision agriculture specialist for OSU, says the app allows users to set up digital strip trials for their fields.

“Basically it ensures the replicated treatments are installed, and then also during growing season if they so choose they can take notes as the season progresses and collect data. The app itself will actually analyze that data statistically and provide results to the user,” says Fulton.

Fulton tells Brownfield, users can design replicated plot layouts that can compare hybrids, seeding populations, fertilizer rates and nutrient management systems, among other practices. He says more than 65 percent of farmers today use smart devices and that number is growing each year.

“Putting this into an app, again I don’t have to be a statistician in order to do my replications in order to have a sound replicated study for myself,” says Fulton.

Users all across the country can download the Ohio State PLOTS app for free. Fulton says the app will also include fertilizer application options for users soon.
