Another swing-and-miss on Section 179 conformity

Legislators and Governor Walz have let another opportunity to bring full Section 179 conformity to Minnesota farmers slip through their hands.

House Ag and Food, Finance and Policy division chair Jeanne Poppe says legislation that would raise the expense cap to the federal level of $1 million was not passed before the second special session adjourned Tuesday.

“It is especially disappointing because our farmers and small business owners are really wanting us to move that along, and it’s always been an item for us to do. But it costs a significant amount of money.”

Lawmakers were unsuccessful in passing Section 179 conformity last year, and have now failed to get a bill to the Governor’s Desk through the 2020 regular session or during back-to-back special sessions.

“To be able to put this in the bill and have it part of the package is critical. And when we don’t do it, it puts it as a potential loss in the future.”

Poppe tells Brownfield while another special session is likely in August, she’s very concerned about a positive outcome for Section 179 conformity.
