A Western Corn Belt farmer says Mother Nature has been relentless after another round of severe storms moved across the area Tuesday night.

“It’s been a rough couple of weeks.”

Eastern Nebraska farmer Mitch Oswald tells Brownfield severe winds and hail over the last week have destroyed nearly 700 acres of corn, soybeans and sorghum. “I’ve got the disk hooked up and I’m ripping fields now to replant.”

He says the damage has been widespread, especially to his southern farms. “We’ve gotten two hailstorms and I’ve lost a quarter down there.  Over by Hampton, I lost a quarter.  I lost two corner-systems on pivots.  I’ve got to replant four quarters total.”

And, Oswald says, Tuesday’s storm wasn’t an exception. “It’s getting pretty crazy to watch. I know last night my brother-in-law by the interstate, they got ping-pong and golf ball-size hail for three rounds last night. He said that there’s not a pivot standing, and a field left.”

He says that his insurance adjuster has taken more than 2,000 claims on pivots alone in the area over the last month.
