Another round of China, U.S. trade talks to start

China and the U.S. will be back at the trade negotiating table Thursday, just as more tariffs take effect.

Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue says the focus of the talks remains the same.  “Setting a platform where we can persuade China to stop their retaliatory efforts which we believe are unfair and illegal against U.S. producers and resolve the trade dispute.”

The talks in Washington are led by Chinese Vice Commerce Minister Wang Shouwen and Undersecretary David Malpass with the U.S. Treasury Department.  The mid-level talks are not expected to reach a major breakthrough.

Another 16 billion dollars’ worth of Chinese products will have tariffs beginning Thursday and China will simultaneously impose more counter-tariffs.

The U.S. Trade Representative’s Office is also holding hearings this week on an additional 200-billion dollars’ worth of tariffs on Chinese goods.

President Trump told Reuters he has no time frame for resolving the trade dispute and says like China, he has a long horizon.
