Animal welfare group challenges advertising claim

The Animal Welfare Institute is challenging deli meat company Boar’s Head on advertising the quality of care it uses with its chickens and turkeys.

The challenge before the Federal Trade Commission claims false advertising saying Boar’s Head only meets minimum standards of animal care. The institute said this is the first challenge against an animal welfare claim on a meat product using the USDA label application.

AWI said allowing such welfare claims undercuts farmers who do have higher welfare standards and disincentivizes improved welfare practices.
