Animal ID tag deadline tomorrow

Happy cattle700x400The deadline for having approved livestock identity tags is Wednesday March 11th, 2015 under the USDA’s new animal identification program.

Ginette Kurtz, director of commercial programs at the American Angus Association, tells Brownfield Ag News the “900-coded” ear tags will no longer be accepted,“Some states will accept brands and tattoos and you’ll definitely need to talk with your state veterinarian to find out what the receiving state will accept. But, more than likely, most states are going to want a state-coded tag that documents, you know, that it is a U.S. coded tag.”

She says technology has come a long way in making animal identification easier than in the past, “It’s kind of like the iPhone that came out with no apps, so to speak. So now there are products that make using the EID tag more cost effective to the producer,” says Kurtz.

The USDA recommends cattle producers contact their State Animal Health Official for their specific traceability requirements.
