American Soybean Association looking for bigger farm bill budget

The American Soybean Association is asking for a bigger farm bill baseline.

ASA director of government affairs Christy Seyfert says they are letting House and Senate Ag Committee members know additional resources are needed to write the next farm bill.

“They’ve heard us loud and clear, they have some politics of their own that they have to work through and navigate in requesting funding or determining the right level of funding. So I think step one is thankfully done.”

During a farm bill forum at the MN Ag Expo in Mankato, Minnesota Thursday, she said the next step is to continue reminding lawmakers as the process moves forward.

“The need to have a better farm bill, an improved farm bill, and that takes resources. So we’ve been talking about it for some time and we’ll continue to do that, but we also want to be smart and take our cues from committee leaders so that we are navigating this path carefully with them.”

Seyfert says ASA also wants higher reference prices in the next farm bill and more support for trade promotion programs like the Foreign Market Development Program and Market Access Program.
