American Farmland Trust Farmer Relief Fund is giving 1,000 farmers $1,000

American Farmland Trust’s Farmer Relief Fund started sending out $1,000 grant checks to 1,000 farmers across the country. AFT announced the relief fund after estimates were released that the local and regional food systems could lose up to $1.3 billion between March and May.

The funds are going to small- and mid-size producers that sell direct to consumers or other food service businesses.

AFT President and CEO John Piotti says they hope to have more rounds of funding and could eventually broaden the funds to other farmers.

AFT is asking Congress to move fast to provide federal assistance for farmers and ranchers, including implementation of the coronavirus relief package.
