American Farmland Trust and Chobani partner to help dairy farmers

A new partnership between American Farmland Trust and dairy processor Chobani aims to build public support for dairy farmers.

Ten cents from every four-pack sold of Chobani’s new Farmer Batch Milk and Cookies flavored Greek yogurt will be donated to American Farmland Trust. David Haight, Vice President of Programs with AFT tells Brownfield they will use the proceeds to offer micro-grants to dairy farm families.

“To help develop farm business plans, farm transfer or succession plans, plans for permanently protecting their farm real-estate development or to generate renewable energy and adopt climate smart farming practices.”

He says as farmers face challenges like low milk prices, both parties want to boost support for American dairies and let consumers know….

“That farm families are helping address some of the most important needs that America faces, and we can’t take them for granted.”

According to AFT, the US has lost an average of five dairy farms per day for the past ten years; 17,000 in total.

  • Even with American Farmland trust there is a division of inequality and fairness in the application presentation. It cost 50,000 dollars for the application fee. And these farms that can afford it, also do not have to put ALL their land in the trust either. Thus, they get a 2 million dollar bill from the trust, and can buy out other farms. It is not right how the program runs for many smaller farmers. It is not an apples to apples for the program to help all “real” farmers.
