American Farm Bureau puts full-court press on USMCA

It’s do-or-die time for USMCA ratification in 2019.

White House and Mexican negotiators reportedly agreed to changes over the weekend sought by House Democrats and have submitted the text to Speaker Pelosi.

On Saturday, Mexico’s top trade official told Agri-Pulse talks were going well and that all sides were close to an agreement.

American Farm Bureau vice president Scott VanderWal tells Brownfield AFBF is putting on a full-court press to get USMCA passed this year.

“Speaker Pelosi has the power to bring (USMCA) to the Floor and get it done, and we think the votes are there. So we’re asking all our members to contact their offices frequently and say ‘are we there yet? Can we get this thing to the Floor and get it passed?”

There’s concern Democrats in the House are preoccupied with impeaching President Trump, but Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said Friday a USMCA vote is possible this week if the implementing text is ready.

Nearly 160 House Republicans are sending Speaker Pelosi a letter today pressuring her to put USMCA on the Floor before Congress runs out of time.

Brownfield interviewed VanderWal at the Wisconsin Farm Bureau annual meeting in Wisconsin Dells.
