Alberta pigs had the same H1N1 virus sweeping the globe
Canadian scientists say theyhave mapped the full genetic sequence of the H1N1 virus found in hogs on an Alberta farm. Officials with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency say this validates earlier test results and confirms the virus in the pigs is the same H1N1 which is causing illness in humans around the world. The pigscontracted the virus from an infected worker at the farm who had been in Mexico.
CFIA says they will share the information with international agencies and other countries to facilitate surveillance and detection activities. They also stress Influenza viruses do not affectthe safety of properly handled and cooked pork.
