Agronomist provides tips on 2023 crop preparation

As preparation is underway for another season of high inputs, an agronomist says farmers need to be careful not to cut corners on fertility.

Dana Harder with Burrus Seed tells Brownfield growers need to spend time in the fields this fall to maximize return on investment in 2023.

“Soil testing is going to pay dividends. When inputs go up, doing your homework and knowing where you stand for soil fertility and grid sampling tells you where you are at, then you know how to manage going forward.”

He recommends farmers consider the maximum return to nitrogen rate for their area and make decisions in-season based on weather.

“Split applying nitrogen and using it when you need it is key. So, if we run into some wet conditions bumping up that side dress application will pay dividends verses applying it all up front.”

Harder says growers should compare prices, take advantage of early season discounts and look for built-in protection when selecting seed.

“Look for good gray tolerance in corn and good southern rust and tar spot ratings. That will put you in premium position instead of having to splurge for crop protection products.”
