Agronomist describes a “wonky” spring in east-central Iowa

An extension field agronomist calls the planting season in east-central Iowa unusual.

Rebecca Vittetoe with Iowa State University suggests a cool and dry spring is not normal.

Usually if we see cool, it’s cool (and) wet conditions. And if we see the dry, it’s usually warm and dry. So it’s just kind of wonky to see the cool and dry conditions.”

She tells Brownfield there’s some uneven emergence because a lot of corn was planted into dry soils.

“I can go out in a corn field and see plants that are at V1, and then the plant right next to it might just be emerging. And then there might be part of the row where no plants have emerged yet.”

Vittetoe says recent rains are helping germination and she doubts many farmers will have to replant.
