Agriculture coops’ net income grows

coopNet income for the nation’s agriculture cooperatives was up 14 percent last year.  The USDA’s annual report on national cooperative business sales says the country’s agriculture cooperatives posted record net income of $7 billion in 2015.

The USDA says total revenue for the Top 100 cooperatives fell in 2015, but net income rose.  The nation’s largest is CHS, a fuel, grain and food cooperative based in Minnesota, with $34.7 billion in total business volume for 2015.  Milk marketing cooperative Dairy Farmers of America, based in Kansas City, is second, with $13.9 billion in total revenue.  Dairy foods and farm supply co-op Land O’Lakes, based in Minnesota is third, with $13.1 billion in sales.

Iowa is home to more Top 100 co-ops than any other state, with 15.  Next is Minnesota 11 and Nebraska with nine. California and Illinois each have six, while Wisconsin has five.
