Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue outlines SNAP work requirements

The USDA has released final rules that strengthen work requirements for able-bodied adults under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue says one of the provisions in the work rules is a categorical exclusion.

“If you had a brochure or phone call with an agency there you would deem to be eligible for SNAP– those categorical exclusions will be rescinded in that way and you have to have at least a cash grant of $50 or more from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) to demonstrate your need,” he says.

He says the other provision is a standard utility allowance.

“This was a manipulation by some states of giving their recipients a dollar a month to qualify them again in an eligibility for the SNAP program that we felt like was misused in that regard,” he says.

Perdue says the rule will restore dignity to those who receive SNAP by following the original intent of the law. Speaking at the National Grain and Feed Association’s Country Elevator Conference, he said they will also provide training and other skills to SNAP recipients
