Governors to meet with Vice President Pence on NAFTA

Four Republican governors will meet with Vice President Mike Pence today to discuss the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

According to Politico, Rick Snyder of Michigan, Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas, Kim Reynolds of Iowa, and Bill Haslam of Tennessee, will discuss the economic impact of withdrawing from NAFTA.

Governor Snyder recently spoke out about the importance of fair trading practices in trade agreements at the Michigan Farm Bureau annual meeting, telling members NAFTA needs to be improved, not broken.

“I believe we can improve NAFTA, it’s been around a long time and there are some issues related to dairy that are important improvements we could make,” he says. “But, I also think it’s important we don’t have a breakdown of NAFTA.”

Many agriculture leaders have spoken out on the importance of NAFTA since President Trump threatened to withdraw from the agreement. Republican Senators met with Trump last week to discuss how important NAFTA is to agriculture trade.

The sixth round of negotiations are scheduled for late January in Montreal.
