Ag groups petition for NAFTA support

Nearly 170 ag groups are requesting state leaders support agriculture trade in NAFTA renegotiations.

Letters went out to all state governors, ag commissioners and economic development leaders asking for support to modernize NAFTA and warned of the adverse impacts a withdrawal could have for the U.S.

Rodney Weinzierl, executive director of the Illinois Corn Growers Association, tells Brownfield trade agreements are extremely important to move products, especially as farmers are anticipating a record corn harvest this season.  “By far and away, our largest customers are Mexico and Canada—and I’m talking ag products in general—just because of their proximity and the U.S. having a transportation cost advantage.”

Food and agricultural exports to Canada and Mexico last year totaled nearly $43 billion.
