Ag groups have NAFTA hopes in Mexico’s new president

There’s hope among U.S. ag groups that the newly elected president of Mexico is committed to NAFTA re-negotiations, “I’m going to be optimistic and hope so!” says Casey Guernsey with Americans for Farmers and Families. He says Mexico is a very important market for U.S. beef and producers are paying close attention, “I don’t know of a time in my life that I’ve ever heard (U.S.) farmers interested in Mexican politics but it’s been at the top of their list as far as knowing what is important that is occurring so that NAFTA talks can resume and, hopefully, move closer to a resolution.”

Politico reports Mexican President López Obrador has said that he would like to wrap up NAFTA negotiations but is also willing to walk away from them.

Americans for Farmers and Families is a coalition of farmers, suppliers, transporters, retailers and consumers who support preserving and modernizing NAFTA. Some commodity groups in Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Michigan and Wisconsin are among its members.
