Ag economist looks ahead to Friday’s Hogs and Pigs report

It’s a big week for USDA reports.

USDA’s final Quarterly Hogs and Pigs report of 2022 will provide some insight into where hog supplies are headed next year.

University of Missouri livestock economist Scott Brown. “We might get a modest increase in production in 2023, but if we get the report Friday, and see some type of expansion trying to happen in sow inventory,” he says.  “That’s what I’m watching. We need some new information to help us kind of set the stage for where supplies are going to be in 2023.”

Allendale’s pre-report estimates for the USDA’s Quarterly Hogs and Pigs report suggest Friday’s numbers could show the smallest December 1 hog herd in five years and the smallest December 1 breeding herd in seven years.

Also out this week – are Cold Storage and Livestock Slaughter numbers on Thursday and Cattle on Feed on Friday.
