AFBF says SUPCO must take on Prop 12

American Farm Bureau President Zippy Duvall says it’s imperative the U.S. Supreme Court address the constitutionality of California’s Proposition 12.

Duvall says Tuesday’s ruling by the Sacremento County Superior Court recognized the inherent flaws of the law that would impose strict hog housing regulations on pork producers across the country that sell to California.

That court delayed enforcement of Prop 12 because there are no clear regulations on how it will be enforced.

Duvall says California voters were told the law would improve animal welfare and food safety but it will do neither.

He says “Small farms across the country will be forced to make expensive and unnecessary changes to their operations, which will lead to more consolidation and higher food prices for all of America’s families.”

Duvall says the laws of one state should not set the rules for the entire nation.
