Achievement Award winners are goal oriented family farmers

A west central Illinois couple are winners of the Young Farmer & Rancher Achievement Award at the American Farm Bureau Convention in Phoenix.

Knox County farmers Grant and Kristen Strom won the award, which recognizes young producers who excel in their farm operations and have superior leadership abilities.  Kristen Strom says completing the application gave them a clear path forward as a couple.

“We’re both very goal-oriented people and knew that that would be a great reflection component for us of where do we want to be in five years, how about ten years, and what do we do now and where can we go from here,” said Kristen Strom, in an interview with Brownfield Ag News after receiving the award.

Grant Strom says he and his wife established personal and farming goals, but he tells Brownfield the most important goals involve family.

“The main goal being a family farming operation is making it sustainable for the next generation,” said Grant Strom.  “We have three kids, my sister has a couple kids that are all close to the farm, so we’re hoping that at least one of them will be interested in helping to take it over, and hopefully all of them.  We’ll expand businesses and expand operations to accommodate that.”

Participants are evaluated on a combination of their agricultural operation’s growth and financial progress, Farm Bureau leadership and leadership outside of Farm Bureau.

The prize connected with the award is a Chevy pick-up.
