ACE supports Minnesota’s Future Fuels Act

The American Coalition for Ethanol endorses legislation introduced in Minnesota designed to reduce the carbon intensity of the state’s transportation fuel.

ACE CEO Brian Jennings tells Brownfield the Minnesota Future Fuels Act is similar to clean fuel standards found in states like California and Oregon.

“But this Minnesota legislation has a Midwest spin or twist on it that we think is superior, frankly, to the approach that’s been taken on the West Coast.”

He says unlike in California where there’s a clear preference for electric vehicles, the Minnesota clean fuels policy does NOT pick winners and losers in the marketplace.

“It essentially says the carbon intensity of all motor fuels sold in Minnesota must reduce greenhouse gases by a certain percentage, and it allows the market to determine the so-called winners.”

He suggests E15, E30, and E85 would likely be winners in a market-oriented policy because those fuels are low-cost and low-carbon.

The Future Fuels Act was heard in the Minnesota House Climate and Energy Finance and Policy Committee Thursday and Jennings says the bill has bipartisan and bicameral support.
