A shift in China’s pork industry

There has been a big push in China to shift pork production to more large farms as the country continues its efforts to rebuild its herd following the outbreak of African swine fever in 2018.

Paul Sundberg, director of the Swine Health Information Center says that’s also helping reduce the transmission of the virus.  “If you move to the larger farms you may have the opportunity to implement biosecurity that you wouldn’t in a lot of smaller farms that are scattered around,” he says.

He tells Brownfield that is a shift in culture for Chinese producers, but there’s a lot of support behind the efforts.

However, Sundberg says they still have a lot of small farms and small production operations to go to implement biosecurity and ultimately help the health of the national herd.

Just last week China reported its first case of African swine fever in over three months.
