A proactive approach to crop management
Corn rootworm can cost farmers up to a billion dollars in crop damage and control costs annually, and farmers saw increased pressure from the pest in 2020.
Jody Gander, market development manager with Bayer CropScience says if growers had corn rootworm problems this year, they need to be proactive in their plans for the 2021 growing season. “There are a number of things they can do, one of those is traited corn products such as SmartStax technology,” he says. “They can also do things like crop rotation, which is one of the things we recommend growers do to try and break the life cycle of corn rootworm.”
In 2019 Bayer launched The Watch, a program to help educate farmers and encourage them to evaluate their corn rootworm pressure and management practices. A link to more information can be found HERE.
