A place for biofuels in greener transportation future

A leader with the Iowa Corn Growers is confident biofuels will play a prominent role in a greener transportation future.

Vice president Lance Lillibridge, who farms in eastern Iowa, says low carbon, high octane fuel like ethanol can be featured in climate-friendly policy, but the infrastructure has to be there.

“Everybody talks about the electric vehicle, but the electric vehicle is not going to take over transportation, it just cannot do it. If one would ever put the pencil to what kind of electricity and what kind of resources it’s going to take to charge cars, there’s no way the combustion engine can go away.”

He tells Brownfield it’s important consumers have a choice.

“If they choose an electric vehicle, that’s great. But we also need to have that choice of a liquid fuel, and high octane, low carbon engines are a way of the future for the environment, to reach our sustainability goals, and to be economical they definitely have to be a part of our future.”

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds introduced legislation that would set a 15 percent minimum ethanol standard, similar to a bill being considered in Minnesota.
