A mix of harvest conditions likely to affect winter wheat

The president of the National Wheat Growers Association says he finally finished all of his harvest last week.

“It was kind of a struggle with wet conditions, but the crop came off, we finally got it with good quality and a lot of bushels.”

Michigan farmer Dave Milligan tells Brownfield between wet conditions at harvest in regions like his and the drought-stressed areas of the west, winter wheat planting this year are likely to be limited.

“We’re starting to see wheat prices get up to record highs and it’s a world supply thing—there’s just shortages,” he explains.  “With the drought issues, supply is down.”

Milligan says he expects supply shortages and inflated input prices to cause some major changes to farmers’ management decisions into next year.
