A lot of surplus soil moisture in Indiana

January was wetter and warmer than normal for Indiana.

The USDA says average temperatures were 8.4 degrees above typical levels and average precipitation statewide was 4.59 inches, 2.54 higher than usual.

44% of the state’s topsoil and 33% of subsoil have surplus moisture levels, leaving feedlots muddy and keeping producers out of the fields.

Calving is underway and hay supplies are tight in some areas.

61% of winter wheat is rated good to excellent, an increase of 6% on the month.

The USDA’s weekly national crop progress and condition reports resume in April.
